Get out the radar-gun!

How fast should I be throwing at my age?

It's a common question most kids and/or their parents want to know.
Any experienced coach will tell you it's not important. Work on your accuracy. Have sound mechanics and your velocity will follow. And that's good advice. However, most people want some sort of baseline to know how they are measuring up among their age group.

Here's a mathematical formula that seems to work well ...

Average pitcher = Age X 4.3 mph
Top 10% of pitchers = Age X 5 mph

eg) Age 10
Average speed = 43 mph
Top 10% speed = 50 mph
